Signed: I Cerf Passage st. Hubert Bruxelles

Case: 39,5 x 30 x 11,5 cm

This type of instrument belongs to the category of the horizontal microscopes, among which can be numbered examples designed by Amici for Italy and Chevalier for France. Other designers followed the same example such as Molteni in Paris, Spencer in the United States. In some other cases, resellers asked other designers to design the instrument on their behalf and have it stamped with their own name. This is certainly our case, as we currently do not have any information about a designer under this name. Furthermore, the works of St. Hubert Gallery, located in Brussels near Grand Place, started in 1846 when Leopold I laid the first brick. The Gallery has been officially opened on 20 June 1847. It is divided in two main sections called Galerie du Roi and Galerie de la Reine. A third section, smaller than the previous ones, was named Galerie du Prince. During the 19th century St. Hubert Gallery was the centre of the society life, and also nowadays continues to attract visitors thanks to its luxury shops and coffee shops. We can therefore presume that the shop of the reseller was in the same central area of the city.

The engraving on the eyepiece "I Cerf Passage st.Hubert", bears the signature of the reseller at that time (1845-1845 circa).
