Signed: J.H.STEWARD.406.Strand. LONDON. N.°490.
Box 17,5 x 22 x 14 cm
This instrument
has a Y-shaped foot fixed to mahogany base plate, painted in green and gold,
that supports the limb by trunnions. The tube can be disassembled to pack
the microscope into the box.
Coarse focus is by a prismatic rackwork inside the limb that raises the
arm carrying the body tube; fine focus is by a lever on the nosepiece. The
stage has a square top plate and a slide rest slides over it. Below, a knurled
knob fixes a three holes circular diaphragm. The mirror, with some wear
due to aging, is fixed to a collar that slides over the lower limb. There
are two unsigned objectives, with two brass canisters signed respectively:
J.H.Steward 406 Strand ½ in; J.H.Steward 406 Strand 1/4. One eyepiece
and a bull's eye are present. In the drawer, there are seven Victorian slides.
The mahogany box has the key and the handle.
