Compound microscope by Ross, ¾
19th C.
Signed:
A. Ross London 1720
This
an example of the most famous Ross's stand and one which became extremely popular
by most suppliers in the rest of the century. The Y-shaped foot holds two side
plates, strengthened by internal buttresses, forming trunnions to hold the limb,
where in the lower end a collar supporting the plano-concave mirror can slide
along it. Coarse focus is by a triangular-shaped bar moved by rackwork, running
on the limb and operated by two milled head screws; fine focus is not present.
In the upper part of the limb an arm, fixed by a long screw, is supporting the
body tube. It can be disassembled in three parts: tube, stage and foot. An objective
and an eyepiece are present.
